Sweden Smash World Windpower Records By Harnessing Storm Energy

Over 5.6 million kWh has been generated by Swedish wind farms as the country harvested the energy of “Storm Urd.” This means they have smashed the previous record by a whopping half a million kWh, generating more power from wind than ever before.

As Storm Urd hit the South of Sweden over the festive season, the Swedish wind farms were racking up huge amounts of energy as hurricane force winds hit certain parts of the country. This enormous amount of energy actually means that over the last 3 or so days, it has accounted for over 26% of Sweden’s total energy consumption as a country.

As a result of all the renewable energy being generated in Sweden, the total cost of electricity has fallen by a third overall to the people of Sweden. Places such as Denmark and Finland are also seeing huge energy price cuts due to their continued endeavours to generate clean, renewable energy.

Anders Engqvist, head of risk management for Bixia, said:

“The extremely windy weather in the past few days meant that wind power produced almost as much as six nuclear power plants. Never before has Swedish wind power produced that much”

During 2015, Swedish wind farms generated around 16.6 TWh of electricity – making up around 12% of the country’s total electricity supply. Compared to countries such as Germany, who generated 85.4 TWh in the same year, this is still fairly low.

The examples being set in Europe are extremely admirable and are something to be appreciated and followed. The energy is all around us and it is extremely comforting to know that everything is being done in some areas of the world to harness this energy and making it free for the people – wind costs nothing after all.
